New videos: young people’s rights when parents separate

Two new videos and an infographic on young people’s rights when parents separate have been developed in a collaboration between Professor Anne Barlow with Dr Jan Ewing (University of Exeter Law School) in partnership with the National Youth Advocacy Service and the National Association of Child Contact Centres.

Video 1: The Rights Idea? Children’s rights when parents separate (4 min 45 sec)
This follows the separation journeys of two families; Tom’s whose family settled in mediation and Chloe, Jack and Rosie’s whose parents went to court. Narrated by Tom, the fourteen-year-old son from one of the families, it explores young people’s rights to information, consultation and (where needed) representation when their parents separate.

Video 2: Tom’s Story (3 min 24 sec)
This outlines Tom’s experiences of meeting with the mediator.

The infographic is available as a PDF here.

These resources are freely available for use by organisations supporting young people whose parents separate, as well as in PSHE lessons in schools as part of the rebranded Relationships and Sex Education curriculum.
