This course is aimed at :
- Accredited mediators seeking to return to practice.
- Any mediator previously working towards accreditation and is seeking to be registered upon return to practice.
- Family mediators who have not been practising and are not registered with the FMC for the current year.
However, regardless of your status, it’s important to visit Family Mediation Council (FMC) webpage ‘Returning to Mediation’ and follow the links to the ‘Return To Practice Guidance’ and the Flowchart which gives details and advice about the procedure.
For example, the ‘Return to Practice Guidance’ describes the need to produce an Action Plan, with the support of a Professional Practice Consultant (PPC) – which has to be approved by Family Mediation Standards Board (FMSB). As a result, the FMSB may indicate the need for Refresher Training.
So it is important to check the procedure and flowchart to identify if the Family Mediation Refresher course is appropriate or relevant for you.
The Outcomes of the Family Mediation Refresher Course :
NFM’s Family Mediation Refresher Course meets the FMSB standards and requirements.
The objective of the Family Mediation Refresher Course is to refresh your knowledge of the mediation process, to update your mediation skills, to provide an update on recent and relevant developments, and to encourage your reflection and consideration of the next steps so that you can pursue accreditation, or re-accreditation, with renewed confidence.
Our Family Mediation Refresher Course uses a blended approach so you will have a set of online study materials to work through before attending the live online training sessions delivered by webinar.
In order to complete the course you must complete the self-study materials (Part A below) and attend the live training sessions (Part B below).
Information about Part A of the course
You will have access to online self-study materials which are interactive ie. reading, listening to sound files and watching videos. There are also pause points to reflect on how the learning can be applied to your role as a family mediator.
The expected study time is 16 hours. However, this is an approximate indication of study – you may find it takes a little longer.
Access to the online self-study materials will be 3 weeks prior to the live training sessions.
If you need assistance with any of the online materials please contact : TrainingSupport@nfm.org.uk
Information about Part B of the course
This training consists of attendance at live training sessions delivered by MS Teams.
The training will be delivered over 2 full days.
These sessions provide an ideal opportunity to participate in group discussions, examine scenarios, share ideas and to practice mediation skills in role-play sessions.
Please note that it is essential to complete the self-study in order to fully participate in the live training sessions.
To prepare for the Family Mediation Refresher Training :

FEEDBACK from previous Family Mediation Refresher Training :
“The course overall has been excellent. This has been the first course I have completed on zoom, and whilst initially feeling apprehensive about it, my view is that it has been hugely successful and something that I would highly recommend”.
“I learnt new skills whilst also refreshing many of the skills I learnt in my initial foundation training. I would be extremely happy to recommend this course to anyone requiring mediator refresher training. A definite 5 stars!”
