Individual Counselling

Because separation and divorce is emotionally difficult and people experience it differently, you might find counselling helpful. Sometimes there is social stigma attached to counselling, such as only those who are going mad go to a counsellor. This is simply not true. It is normal to struggle with emotions at this time and some will cope with it on their own, some need a bit more support and this is where counselling can help.

Like mediators, counsellors don’t tell you what to do. They don’t judge you and they keep your private information confidential. They are trained to help you work out how you feel and why, which in turn helps you work out what you want to do about now and the future. Counsellors are trained to understand the grief cycle and how it affects people.

To access individual counselling, you can contact your GP – they might be able to refer you for free counselling or might have a Counsellor employed at the surgery. Otherwise, you can contact the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) who have a list of registered Counsellors and can tell you what the choices are in your area.

If you decide to use the internet or yellow pages to find some help, remember to check the person is a member of the BACP or UKCP (United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy) as this tells you they are properly trained and regulated.

If you attend a meeting with a mediator and you or they think counselling might help, they should be able to give you information about local providers and how to access help.

NFM is a network of professional family mediation providers based in England and Wales that work with families affected by relational breakdown. All providers aim to help clients achieve an outcome that works best for them and their family
