Drug and Alcohol Misuse in Children and Young People

As a parent, you will probably be concerned about the effect your separation is having on your child. Some children show little upset other than their first hearing the news you are separating. Most children take a little time to process the information and to think about how their lives might change. They might have some concerns about the future depending on their age. Sometimes their behaviour changes for the worse during this period.

Children can also get involved in drug or alcohol misuse – this might be a distraction for them or a way of relieving stress or they might be very vulnerable right now to peer pressure. Often children are worried about losing friends when their family is in turmoil so will do more than usual to stay popular. You might notice a change in mood, bags under the eyes, etc. If someone is under the influence of drink or drugs, their pupils might be dilated or their speech slurred. Its important that you keep lines of communication open with them so that they can tell you how they are feeling and you can get them the help and support they need.

Check your local area for Alcohol/Drug Support and Advice Services. You can also Talk to Frank for friendly advice. They will help you understand the latest terms for drugs so you can be more aware of what your child might be taking. It may help to talk to the school to inform them but also to alert them to watch over your child a bit more than usual. You can also talk to your GP as a referral to other agencies could be easier this way.
