The 30thbest price of National Family Mediation was an event to remember.
Professor Robert Emery gave a masterclass to NFM members in the morning outlining his considerable experience as a mediator and researcher. He gave an analysis of relationship breakdown which many of our mediators could relate to. Now we have the scientific evidence to support our own experience in the mediation room. Most significant and shocking of all, was his research over 12 years looking at contact between non-resident parents and their children. The research was based on random allocation of court and mediation. Those who went to court had less contact over the 12 years and a significant number lost contact all together. The group, randomly selected, who went to mediation had more contact and kept contact. If that’s not evidence that mediation works for children I don’t know what is.

Baroness Brenda Hale, President of NFM, gave a potted history of 30 years of family mediation. It was significant that many of those pioneers who had blazed the mediation trail over the years were sitting in the room, including Thelma Fisher, who also wrote of her experiences in the commemorative handbook. The historical perspective given by Baroness Hale showed how far mediation has come since those early days and inspired all the NFM mediators present to keep the flag flying.

The final speaker was NFM’s new patron, Bel Mooney. Her “problem page” in the Daily Mail is read by 6 million peopleevery week and is a thoughtful and sincere response to many of the letters she receives. Thanks to her, many more people are now aware of NFM and the work we do, and we are very grateful that she is promoting us to the people who need us most. Her explanation of the breakdown of letters she receives from a wide variety of people is a reminder of how many are still traumatised by separation and divorce and how important it is that we work to find ways of guiding them to mediation and the services they could benefit from.
