Walking on Eggshells

For the last three years Oxfordshire Family Mediation, affiliated to National Family Mediation have been running the Walking on Eggshells project, an innovative project enabling children and young people to explore and discuss the effects of divorce and separation on families. Through the project, young people use drama and improvisation to write a play using their personal experiences as inspiration. The play is performed to younger children and followed up by peer-led workshops run by the actors to talk through the issues which are raised during the performance.

Walking on Eggshells is about empowering children and young people to recognise the issues which come up for children whose families separate and divorce; think through ways of coping when parents live apart; overcome the taboo which surrounds the topic; and recognise the importance of this experience for many of their peers.

National Family Mediation, in collaboration with these agencies, is building towards developing a larger programme incorporating Walking on Eggshells, by learning from the pilots run by Oxfordshire Family Mediation and Pegasus Theatre. The hope is that this will be used in schools, youth clubs, churches and colleges throughout the country, enabling them to explore separation and divorce issues and break the taboo which surrounds the issue.
