Abduction

unlawful kidnapping

Acknowledgment of Service

a form that is completed by the respondent in the divorce process

Adoption order

a court order giving the person adopting the child the parental rights and duties in relation to that child.

Adultery

voluntary sexual intercourse between people of the opposite sex, one of whom is married to someone else.

Affidavit

a statement of fact in writing made on oath and signed in the presence of a solicitor or other authorised person.

Ancillary

in addition to

claims for maintenance, lump sum and adjustment of ownership of matrimonial home or other assets in divorce or judicial separation proceedings

Annuity

a payment of a certain sum of money made every year

Arrangements for Children

a form that needs to be completed with the divorce petition which sets out plans for the children?s future

Arrears

payments which have not been made on the date they are due

Assets

something of value

Assurance

insurance on someone?s life

Beneficial interest

a person who is entitled to a share of the property whether or not it is in their name is said to have a beneficial interest

Bequest

a gift left under a will

CAFCASS

The Child and Family Court Advisory and Support Service

Charge

security taken to make sure someone pays a debt or performs a duty

Chattels

personal possessions

Clean break

a final financial settlement so that neither party is dependent on the other

Co-owners

persons owning a property together

Co-respondent

the person with whom the respondent is alleged to have committed adultery
